Do-It-Yourself fabric treatment
One of the easiest ways to change the look of fabric is through bleaching – and there are a number of ways to achieve this. Simple peroxide is available from most supermarkets in the laundry aisle, and you can achieve your desired effect by reading the instructions on the bottle. If, however, you want to take the natural route, you can use lemon juice and sunlight. Obviously not as powerful as the chemical-based peroxide, lemon juice may take longer and will not have as marked an effect, but it is all natural. For dyeing, a simple dye capsule can be dropped into the wash or laundry tub with the fabric you're intending to colour – capsules are available from pharmacists and fabric stores, and should come with instructions for use. Unfortunately, waterproofing and fireproofing are not as simple to achieve at home – wax rubbed into the fabric may be sufficient to repel light showers, and you can also purchase adhesive coating for the more serious of waterproofing tasks, but fireproofing is best left to the professionals. As some fabrics are less prone to fire than others, it may be that you need to use a specific type of textile – so it is best that you seek advice from your local fabric treatment business. |
